Bluebird Houses

Bluebirds are one of the few birds that enjoy spending time in their home. They are unable to build for themselves so when they spot a manmade home it can be a welcoming sight. However, bluebirds are capable of making homes out of vacant woodpecker holes and rotting trees. Waiting for trees to rot or become vacant can be time consuming, so purchasing a bluebird house will attract these birds into your backyard and you may end up sharing your backyard with these friendly flyers.

Bluebirds can be picky about their living environment so it is important to understand what you need to be looking for in order to attract these birds. The most important thing to note is the entrance hole size in a bluebird house. Slightly larger than wrens, bluebirds require an average entrance hole diameter of 1½" to enter bluebird houses. This size is common for swallows and woodpeckers, as well. When nesting, bluebirds prefer bluebird houses in an open area with low grass and sparse foliage.

Bluebirds spot their food from above, so they prefer a clear view of the ground below. Bluebird houses should be mounted roughly 5' above ground. This provides protection from squirrels, cats and other furry animals, and also assists bluebirds in their search for food. Bluebirds have a list of enemies including sparrows and starlings who have been known to attack and kill their chicks. If predators are likely a threat, mount your bluebird house on an aluminum pole with a squirrel baffle.

Bluebird houses are most often constructed from durable cedar or pinewood, but for an eco-friendly alternative, try a recycled bluebird house.

Remember to clear out your bluebird houses after each season to prepare the homes for new guests
